2017 Year in Review and Looking Ahead

January 9, 2018 by Patricia Davidson

I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions but I like to post annually about the photography related goals I would like to achieve in the new year, as well as accomplishments.  It really helps me to put it out there so I can hopefully, stay on track. It’s not to brag or anything but to help me to keep improving as a photographer. You can find 2016, 2015, and 2014 in the archives. I cleaned up some older posts recently so this is as far back as I have currently.

Highlights 2017

Since I wrote a little about my travels, highlights, and shared my Top 10 Favorite Photos of 2017, I won’t go into that here. If you haven’t had a chance to read that and view my annual slideshow, you should check it out!

Goals Accomplished

New eBook: Last year I wanted to complete and launch my eBook, “Your Photography: The Essential Guide to Promoting Your Work Locally“. It launched in May. I was very pleased about the launch and how well it did last year! Thank you to those that have purchased it.

Mailing List: I worked at growing my mailing list. I put out a survey to learn what people were interested in. I’m still working on making it better for subscribers.

Social Media: I wrote last year that I wanted to balance social media better. It can get overwhelming and truthfully, I was not sharing as much as previous years. Even though it might have hurt me with growing my socials, I feel much better about spending my time more productively than constantly hanging out in those places. I’ve already worked out a schedule that I think will work better for this year. I’m excited to implement it.

Website Changes:  Yes, it has been on my list for two years to revamp my website!  I worked on it pretty much all year when I had the time.  I will not go into detail here, but I will create a blog post on what I did in the redesign.

Switched from Canon to Fujifilm –  At the end of 2016 I began selling off my Canon gear and purchasing Fujifilm. It’s been an entire year now that I’ve been exclusively shooting with Fujifilm X Series camera, X-T2. I don’t think I’ll ever go back! I’m enjoying the change.

Though I didn’t list this last year as a goal, I created my first photo print book called, Colors of Bandon. It can be purchased right here on my website as I have several copies in stock.

Interviews & Recognitions

Outdoor Photographer Magazine picked my photo, Elowah Falls for their Photo of The Day.  Also in July Fuji X Passion Virtual Magazine published an article I wrote originally on my blog, My Switch to Fujifilm X-series Cameras.

I was interviewed by Beata Moore for Terra Quantum Territories. It is a platform that highlights landscape photographers.  I was honored to be featured in September.

In October I was pleased to be featured in Landscape Photography Magazine for a Focus on Fuji Interview.

Landscape Photography Magazine chose my photo of White Sands, New Mexico for their November Galleria winner. It was also published in their magazine.

Goals & What’s Coming for 2018

eBooks: Write another eBook or two! I have a couple of ideas I can’t wait to get started on.

Print Book: I am almost ready to announce a new print book much like my Colors of Bandon one. It’s of another favorite Oregon location. I hope you are going to like it! You’ll hear more about it very soon.

Travel: I’m still concentrating on the western part of the US for my travels. There is so much to see!

YouTube Channel: Last year I revived my old YouTube account. I watched so many video tutorials on growing your channel.  I discovered that I really like video editing.  It’s really hard for me to get in front of a camera, let along a video camera. So I’m hoping to challenge myself to do more videos and to be consistent. Wish me luck!
